The women's soccer team split a pair of games over the weekend as they hosted the Roanoke Invitational at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons fell to #4 Emory, 2-0 on Saturday, but picked up a 3-0 win over Salisbury on Sunday to improve their record to 3-1 on the young season.
Roanoke fell to #4 Emory, 2-0 in the Roanoke Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Maroons, who received votes in the NSCAA Div. III National poll, lost for the first time this season while the Eagles improved to 2-0-1.
Lee Bachouros scored the first goal of the contest in the 16th minute off an assist from Charlotte Butker to give Emory the early advantage. The Eagles scored again in the 71st minute of play to put the game away as Emily Feldman scored from Kelley Costopoulos.
Emory outshot Roanoke, 8-2 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam) had the only two shots on goal for the Maroons. Carolyn Sarbacher (Dunkirk, MD, Northern) collected three saves for RC.
The Maroons rebounded on Sunday with a 3-0 win over Salisbury to wrap-up the weekend. The Sea Gulsl dropped to 2-2-2 as they fell to two ODAC opponents in Salem. They fell to Lynchburg on Saturday.
Defender Maggie Dent (Roanoke, VA, Patrick Henry) scored her first goal of the season off a free kick from 30 yards out to give the Maroons an early lead with 12 minutes into play. Stephanie Parenteau (Virginia Beach, VA, Kellam) followed Dent's act just six minutes later as she dribbled past the Salisbury goalkeeper and shot in an open net for her first goal of the year. The Maroon defense would hold off the Sea Gulls and go into halftime with a two-goal lead.
Rebekah Adams (Springfield, VA, West Springfield) scored the first goal of the game, her second of the season, as she took a loose ball and scored to the left side to take the early lead with 10 minutes into the second half to pull away.
The Maroons controlled the contest, outshooting the Sea Gulls, 10-2, including 6-1 in the shots on goal column. Salisbury did, however, hold a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
The women will travel to North Carolina to take on Meredith in non-conference action on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
