Roanoke Swimmers Take 20 of 28 Events in Lynchburg

The Lead: After defeating the University of Lynchburg back on January 16, the Roanoke College men's and women's swim teams once again made the trip to the Hill City to face the Hornets in the pool on the campus of Liberty University. The Maroons duplicated their sweep of the men's and women's teams from Lynchburg by combining to win 20 of the 28 events.

Women's highlights:

  • The night got started with the 200 Medley Relay. The quartet of Maddie Andrews, Sarah Virginia Scott, Kimberly Large, and Elizabeth Roberts posted a .42 second win over their counterparts from Lynchburg, 1:52.45.
  • The Maroons posted a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 Freestyle with Julia Volz touching two seconds ahead of Quinn Keatley and Izzy Mack rounding out the top three.
  • Maria Vinson touched first in the 200 Fly (2:17.68) and then came back to add runner-up finishes in the 100 Fly and 400 Individual Medley.
  • The 50 Freestyle would see the first of two individual wins for Large when she touched the wall 1.28 seconds clear of Paige Shaika. Later in the meet, Large would swim the only sub one minute time in winning the 100 Fly.
  • In the 100 Freestyle, Roberts picked up her individual win (56.40) with Andrews adding a first place finish in the 200 Backstroke, 2:09.66.
  • The Maroons would see one more 1-2-3 effort in the 500 Freestyle as Roanoke continued to dominate the distance events. Grace Fountain led the RC trio with Volz (5:34.46) just touching ahead of Mack (5:34.76).
  • Large, Roberts, and Shaika would join Hannah Petty in putting the finishing touches on the win over the Hornets with a time of 1:40.97 in the 200 Freestyle Relay.

Men's highlights:

  • Richie Evans, Connor Kinkema, Ben Tate, and Xavier Williams posted a time of 1:37.19 in matching the RC women by taking the 200 Medley Relay.
  • The 1000 would see a sweep of the top three spots led by Josh Rauch (10:153.70) followed by Jacob Cole with Jake Bowery making it 1-2-3.
  • With a time of 1:49.48, Brian Grimmett would finish .13 seconds ahead of the field in the 200 Freestyle.
  • Kinkema would be the only swimmer to post three individual wins. Connor would be the only swimmer in the field of the 100 Breaststroke (59.90) to break the one minute mark. Kinkema would start a 1-2-3-4 finish by the RC men in the 200 Breaststroke with Connor Bitz finishing runner-up just .23 seconds ahead of Davis Wheeler. Jacob Winn would round out the top four.
  • The 200 Fly would be the first of two individual first place efforts for Tate (1:57.77). Later in the meet, Tate would be the only swimmer of the night to brake 5:00 when he touched 4:52.67 in the 500 Freestyle and Rauch would finish second.
  • The fastest swim of the meet would belong to Williams when he won the 50 Freestyle in 21.52.
  • Evans, Williams, and Grimmett would join David Adarkwah in closing out the evening with a 1:26.78, first place effort in the 200 Freestyle Relay.
