Roanoke Hosts E&H In ODAC Tune Up

The Lead: In their final tune-up prior to the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Swim Championships, the Roanoke College swim teams hosted Emory & Henry in the pool at the Botetourt YMCA in Dalevile. The Maroon men and women won all but one event on the way to two big wins over the Wasps.

Women's highlights:

  • The 400 Medley Relay would see the quartet of Maddie AndrewsSarah Virginia ScottKimberly Large, and Elizabeth Roberts posted a final time of 4:10.01 to take the first event of the afternoon.
  • Maria Vinson finished ahead of Izzy Mack in the 200 Freestyle in a time of 2:04.43. Vinson would return in the 200 Individual Medley to pick up her second individual win of the meet, 2:16.25.
  • The 50 Freestyle would see Roberts touch in 25.65 as Paige Shaika and Cara Viele rounded out the top three. The 100 Fly would give Roberts a second individual victory with a time of 1:02.62.
  • Large continued her strong 2021 campaign with a win in the 100 Freestyle, touching in 55.20, ahead of teammate Hannah Petty.
  • Julia Volz earned her first place finish in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:36.66.
  • Joining their 400 Medley Relay teammates in picking up individual wins would be Andrews (1:01.46) in the 100 Backstroke and Scott (1:11.16) in the 100 Breaststroke.
  • The final event for the women would see Petty, Viele, Vinson, and Large post a winning time of 3:47.44 in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

Men's highlights:

  • Richie EvansConnor KinkemaBen Tate, and Xavier Williams posted a time of 3:37.90 in winning the 400 Medley Relay.
  • The longest event of the day, the 1000 Freestyle, would see Austin Orange posting a final time of 10:38.67 finishing ahead of Cole Hensen and James Miles.
  • Brian Grimmett, 1:50.50, would just edge Jacob Cole by .16 in the 200 Freestyle with Jake Bowery taking third. Grimmett would add another win in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 49.38 while Bowery would post a time of 5:05.15 to just edge Cole (5:05.47) in the 500 Freestyle.
  • The 50 Freestyle would see another close finish as Nick McGrath (22.09) just out-touched David Adarkwah (22.13) for the closest final of the meet.
  • Kinkiema (2:01.08) would win the first of his two individual events with a .44 victory over Davis Wheeler in the 200 Individual Medley. In the 100 Breaststroke, Connor would again win by the slimmest of margins when his time of 1:00.68 would be just .21 faster than McGrath.
  • Tate and his time of 52.16 would lead to the sweep of the top three spots with Matt Cochis and Kaleb Payne in the 100 Fly.
  • Evans (55.17) and Williams (57.71) would finish 1-2 in the 100 Backstroke.
  • Mack Calvert and Jacob Winn would join Tate and McGrath in posting a time of 3:21.50 in the 400 Freestyle Relay, finishing 2.11 seconds clear of Chris HomerJosh Rauch, Evens and Hensen.
