Blair Trail Gets Win #200 in Averett Invitational
DANVILLE, Va. --- Roanoke went 1-1 in day one of the Sixth Annual Averett Invitational hosted by Averett University on Friday. The Maroons are now 10-11 on the season.
The Maroons topped Ferrum in three games with scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-23. This is the second time that Roanoke has defeated the Panthers, knocking them off in four games during the Maroon Invitational last month. The Maroons are now 36-17 all-time against Ferrum and hasn't lost to the Panthers since 1997.
With the win, head coach Blair Trail won her 200th career match at Roanoke, making her the second active coach in the ODAC to reach that milestone. She is among the top-five in ODAC History in career victories. She has a record of 19-1 against Ferrum both as a coach and a player.
Maggie Wagner (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)led the Maroon attack with 12 kills along with 15 digs. Lynsey Ferris (Roanoke, VA, Northside)added eight kills and three blocks (one solo). Rachel Hawkins (Winchester, VA, Millbrook)had six kills followed by Morgan Grant (Abingdon, VA, Abingdon)with four.
Emily Martin (Daleville, VA, Lord Botetourt)led Roanoke with 25 digs while Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)finished with 32 assists and eight digs.
Roanoke fell to defending ODAC Champion Washington & Lee in three sets with scores of 12-25, 23-25 and 20-25. They haven't defeated the Generals since 2000.
Wagner finished with eight kills and 14 digs to lead the Maroons, followed by Kelsey Largen (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)with six kills along with eight digs. Wagner passed former player and head coach Blair Calvert Trail ‘99 in career attacks with 1466 for her career. Hawkins added seven kills.
Ferris had three kills and one block assist to tie her older sister Ashley Ferris '05 on the career block assists list with 79. She needs two more to move into 10th all-time at Roanoke in that category.
Martin led Roanoke again with 17 digs while Long totaled 23 assists, eight digs and four kills. Martin passed former teammate Stephanie Jones ‘08 for fifth on the all-time digs list at Roanoke. She has 815 for her career entering tomorrow's contests.
Long became the only player in Roanoke Volleyball History to eclipse over 1,000 assists and 1,500 digs in a career in the second match of the evening against W&L. She also moved into sixth on the ODAC all-time career digs list with 1,548 for her career, nine shy of fifth-place on that list. In addition, Long also moved up to sixth on the career assists list at Roanoke.
The women return to action tomorrow as they play ODAC-foe Virginia Wesleyan at 9:30 a.m. followed by Greensboro at 1:30 p.m.
