Volleyball takes two on the first day of the Maroon Classic

The Basics:
Score: Roanoke 3, Ferrum 0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-18)
Records: Roanoke 7-0, 1-0 ODAC / Ferrum 2-2

The Lead: Roanoke continued their hot start to the season by winning its first match of the Roanoke College Maroon Classic in straight sets against its in-state rivalry in Ferrum College.

How it Happened:
  • RC got off to a good start in the first set by leading 6-0 and never looked back.
  • The second set proved to be closer than the first by being tied at 20-20, but after a pair of kills by Kylah Blackmore, RC pulled away to take the set 25-20.
  • The Maroons started off the third set in a similar way to the first by taking an 8-0 lead and maintained that momentum to win the final set 25-18.
  • Kylah Blackmore led the Maroons in kills with 10;�Sydney Daniel and Shelby Frost also pitched in with eight apiece as well.
  • Jessica Block led the team in assists with 26 while on the defensive side Alexandra Martin pitched in with 13 digs.

Records: Roanoke 8-0, 1-0 ODAC / Meredith 2-5

The Lead: The Maroons took on the Avenging Angels from Meredith College in its second match of the day at the Roanoke College Maroon Classic. RC won in straight sets for the second consecutive match.

How it Happened:
  • Roanoke fell behind in the first set 10-3 before some good services from Olivia Earls that got them back in the mix to help win the set by a score of 25-19
  • The Maroons relied on good team play in the second set with a score identical to the first set. RC took six out of the last eight points to help them seal the second set.
  • Back-to-back service aces from Jessica Block helped get the Maroons going in the final frame. Consecutive kills by Allison White in the middle of the set helped give Roanoke momentum to win the final set 25-22
  • Allison White led RC with eight kills while Sydney Daniel and Logan graves also added 16 combined kills as well.
  • Jessica Block dished out 37 assists and also had two service aces.
  • Alexandra Martin led the Maroons in digs with 15 where Christen Zammit (11) and Kylah Blackmore (10) also helped out defensively.

  • Roanoke will look to continue its hot start to the season Saturday, September 12th against Mary Baldwin at 10:00 AM, and then again against Hollins at 2:00 PM.
