Volleyball Closes Cougar Classic With a Pair of Wins

The Lead: Kylah Blackmore had 17 kills and Jessica Block dished out 40 assists as the Maroons topped Salve Regina to open the day at the Cougar Classic.

How it Happened:

  • RC came out in the first game and took a quick 5-0 lead following a Sydney Daniel kill which was set up by an assist from Block.
  • After Salve Regina cut it to 7-4, RC scored eight of the next 10 points, taking a 15-6 lead following an Alex Wolfe kill.
  • Salve Regina pulled within 15-11 but the Maroons recorded 10 of the final 14 points to take game one.
  • After dropping the second game 25-23, Roanoke hit a blistering .318 in the third game to win 25-12. With the score 14-6, RC reeled off 11 of the final 17 points to take the game.
  • In game four, RC was down 19-15 before a kill by Daniel sparked what would be a 10-2 run to end the game by the Maroons to take the match.
  • Daniel had 10 kills, while Wolfe had nine and Logan Graves had six. 
  • Block, Blackmore and Olivia Earls each had 15 digs and Ryan Hedgepeth had 13 stops.

The Lead: Roanoke closed out the Cougar Classic with a decisive 3-0 victory over William Peace to finish the tournament with a 3-1 record.

How it Happened:

  • The first game was tightly contested with the Maroons able to hold off a William Peace rally and win 28-26.
  • In game two, RC hit .387 as a team, connecting for 15 kills on 31 attempts. The Maroons scored the first 11 points and took a 14-1 lead on a kill by Wolfe.  
  • Game three was much of the same as RC hit at a .370 clip, registering 13 kills on 27 attempts. With the score 7-6, RC reeled off seven straight and 12 of the next 14 points to take a commanding 19-8 advantage.
  • Wolfe had a team-high 13 kills, while Blackmore chipped in with 10 kills go along with 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the tournament. For her efforts, she was named to the all-tournament team.
  • Block had 33 assists in the win, while Christen Zammit had seven of her own and Hedgepeth had 17 digs defensively.

Up Next: Roanoke will debut in its new home the Cregger Center on Sept.9-10 when it hosts the Maroon Classic. RC will play Ferrum at 5:00 p.m. and Hollins at 7:00 on Sept. 9. On that Saturday, the Maroons will take on Mary Baldwin at Noon and play in the championship or consolation match at 2:00.
