RC Wins Maroon Classic With Two Victories Saturday

The Lead: Roanoke topped Mary Baldwin 3-0 in the opening match in the second day of the Maroon Classic.

How it happened:

  • Kylah Blackmore led RC with seven kills, while Sydney Daniel and Shelby Frost each had six of their own. Jessica Block dished out 15 assists in the win.
  • Blackmore was able to register a double-double by notching a team-high 11 digs on the defensive side of the net. Block added five stops to go along with five serving aces.
  • RC jumped out to a 13-2 lead on an Olivia Earls ace and the Maroons would go on to win the first game 25-17.
  • RC was up 9-6 in game two before a Blackmore kills sparked a 7-1 run to help the Maroons take control of the game and win 25-14.
  • With the score 3-2 in game three, RC would take 11 of the next 12 points to seal the win.

The Lead: Roanoke won the championship match of the Maroon Classic 3-0 over local rival Ferrum.

How it Happened

  • Alex Wolfe led RC with 13 kills en route to earning all-tournament team honors along with Block who dished out 25 assists to go along with four aces and 16 digs.
  • Daniel chipped in six digs and Blackmore added five kills of her own.
  • Blackmore notched 13 digs on the day, while Ryan Hedgepeth added 16 digs.
  • In game one, Roanoke jumped out to a 10-3 lead on a Daniel's kill. With the score 16-7, the Maroons took nine of the final 12 points capped by back-to-back kills by Daniel and Grace Bullock.
  • With the score 9-9 in game two, RC went on a 13-3 run to take a 22-12 advantage.
  • RC came out of the gates quick in game three, taking a 12-3 lead on a Kelsey Goodman ace.
  • Ferrum rallied to cut it to 15-10 before the Maroons rattled off four of the next five points to make it 19-11.
  • The Panthers rallied to make it 19-16 before a Wolfe kill sparked a 6-3 run for Roanoke to close out the match.
