The Lead: The Maroons got day two of the 2021 Cougar Classic started with a match against Oglethorpe. The first two sets were identical scores of 25-22 with each team taking a set. The third set was tied late but a late run by Oglethorpe would give them the momentum as they went on to the 3-1 win.
Highlights:
- The opening set was tied at 19-19 when the Stormy Petrels scored back-to-back points. Roanoke rallied and after a service error, trailed by just one, 23-22. However, Oglethorpe scored the final two points for the 1-0 advantage.
- The second set would be played almost exactly the same but with Roanoke holding a 23-22 edge. Kills by Linsey Bailey and Rylee Mayer would even the match at a set apiece.
- The third frame would be tight in the closing stages once again, 21-21, after a Ryanna Clark point. The Stormy Petrels scored three straight to take control and held on for a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead.
- The Maroons held an early 8-7 lead but seven consecutive points gave Oglethorpe a big lead and they went on to close out Roanoke for the 3-1 win.
- Bailey and Peyton Kirchner had nine kills with Mayer adding eight. Olivia Newman and Kylee Draper combined for 35 of the team's 41 assists while Kennedy Clemmer registered 22 digs.

The Lead: The final test for the Maroons in the Cougar Classic would be a match with Piedmont on Saturday afternoon. Roanoke used a 36-28 kill edge against the Lions to sweep the match in three sets.
Highlights:
- The opening set would see the lead traded back and forth. With the score tied late, kills by Clark and Bailey would seal the first set for the Maroons.
- Set two was tied at 15 apiece before an attack error and Kirchner service ace allowed Roanoke to take the lead. A 5-0 run, aided by a pair of Angel Ross kills, would put the set away, 25-18, and give RC a 2-0 lead.
- After a ball handling error, Newman served the Maroons to five straight points to seize control of the third frame at the mid-way point on their way to a three set sweep of the Lions.
- Parker Moody paced the offense with 12 kills and Bailey added 10. Kirchner, one solo and three assisted, accounted for four of the team's six blocks.
- Bailey led with 18 digs while Newman handed out a team high 17 assists.
Up next: Roanoke will host the annual Maroon Classic on Friday and Saturday in the Cregger Center. The eight team, 16 match tournament is scheduled to start at 1:00pm on September 10th.
