The Short Story: The Roanoke College women's volleyball team continued their road trip on Monday evening, falling to Salem (NC) in Winston-Salem. This was the second meeting of the two teams as the Maroons took the first matchup 3-2 in their opening game of the Maroon Classic earlier this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a true back and forth opening set with both teams having leads early and mid-way through the first set, with nether team having more than a three-point lead. The Maroons led at 23-21 and 24-23, but Salem scored three-straight points to win the set 26-24 and take a 1-0 match lead.
  • The second set saw the Spirits never trail, using a pair of three-point runs early to extend their lead. Salem went on to win the set 25-16.
  • Roanoke had multiple leads in the third set, however the Spirits used small runs to chip away before claiming the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
  • The Maroons had a lead of 3-2 in the second set, but MC used a few small runs to come back and win the second set 25-11.
  • The Avenging Angels led late in the third set at 21-17 but the Maroons came back and tied the score up at 21-21 and had a set point at 25-24. However, MC won four of the final five points to win the set 28-26 and the match 3-0

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Peyton Kirchner had a match-high 12 kills while hitting for .417 in the three sets.
  • Kylee Draper finished the match with the match-high 29 assists. It marked the 15th time this season that she has finished with 25+ assists in a match.
