Maroons Close-Out Regular Season Falling to ODAC Newcomer Averett in Five

The Short Story: The Roanoke College women's volleyball team returned home for the regular-season finale on Tuesday, falling in five sets to ODAC newcomer Averett, 3-2.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early in the first set, it was point-for-point, but mid-way through the Maroons began to pull away and led by eight at 23-15 before the Cougars went on a run. But a kill by Kylee Draper sealed the first set 25-22.
  • Averett never trailed in the second set and led by as many as eight en route to a 25-20 set two win, tying the match up at 1-1.
  • The Cougars picked up the win in set three after neither team led more than two after the score was tied at 6-6. Averett won three of the final four points for the 25-23 set win and a 2-1 set lead.
  • With the Cougars leading 13-8, the Maroons began to chip away at the lead and ended up taking a 20-19 late in the fourth set. After pulling ahead by two at 24-22, Roanoke clinched the set at 25-23 on a kill by Peyton Kirchner.
  • The Maroons jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the deciding set, but Averett rallied off six-straight points to take the 7-6 lead. The Cougars went on to win the final four points to win the final set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Kirchner had a match-high 20 kills with a .273 attack percentage. She was one of three with double-digit kills as Rylee Mayer (14) and Ryanna Clark (10) both reach two-number kills.
  • While both teams dished out 50 assists, it was Draper who had the match-high 47. She finished with a double-double as she also finished with 14 digs.
  • Kennedy Clemmer had 27 of the Maroons' 73 digs against the Cougars.
