Only the second All-American goalie in Roanoke men's soccer history, Ewert was a First Team All-American as a senior in 1992. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference's First Team goalie that season, Ewert was also the NSCAA Division III National Goalie of the Year in 1992. After taking over the starting goalie duties as a sophomore, Ewert made over 200 saves in his final three seasons as a Maroon and had a save percentage over 80 percent. 

A Roanoke native and Patrick Henry High School graduate, Ewert was a Second Team All-ODAC pick following his sophomore and junior seasons. After leaving the Maroon program following graduation, Ewert played professionally for the Roanoke Wrath and Roanoke RiverDawgs. Ewert was a part of the Maroon program that went 39-25-5 over a four-year span.

At Patrick Henry High School, Ewert was a First-Team Class AAA All-State selection as a senior.  In 2009, Ewert became the only male soccer player inducted to the Patrick Henry High School Sports Hall of Fame.
