Jenkins lettered in track in 1959 and 1960 after being discovered by coach Bast during an intramural contest. Jenkins would go on to enjoy success on the track, winning the Virginia Little Eight Championship.
A member of the Blue Key Honor Fraternity, Jenkins was also named to the list of Who's Who amound students in American Universities and Colleges.
Jenkins would remain involved in racing after graduation, participating in distance road races in which he generally won or placed high in his age group. In 1980, he entered the Masters division and set a new Virginia AAU 5 kilometer indoor track record, and placed 8th in the prestigious Boston Marathon.
