Late Goal Sinks Maroons in Season-Opener

Salem, Va. --- The Roanoke field hockey team saw some glimpses of what it can become this season in a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat to Swarthmore this afternoon at the Drew Fall Fest. Roanoke allowed a goal with 10-seconds left which sealed their fate in what was a positive contest for the Maroons.

Swarthmore held a 31-10 advantage in shots and 13-2 in penalty corners on the afternoon in their first win of the season.

Emily Hutson got the scoring underway in the 22nd minute of the first half to give the Maroons an early 1-0 lead in the first half.

The Garnet's Natalie Stone tied the game off an assist from Ashley Gunter to make the score 1-1 early in the second half.

Mariah Vietri gave the Maroons the lead back two minutes later followed by an Emily Horner goal off a penalty shot to give them a 3-1 advantage with 12 minutes remaining in the match.

Then Swarthmore scored the next two goals within a minute of each other to tie the game at three apiece with five minutes left. Abbe Muller scored off an assist from Sophia Ferguson and Hadley Roach scored the equalizer.

With less than 15-seconds remaining, Swarthmore had a penalty corner for one more shot. The shot was stopped by Kristin Santella, who was credited with a defensive save, but Stone was there to score off the rebound with less than 10-seconds left for their first win of the season.

Christina Scichilone finished with 17 saves in her first career start for Roanoke. Katie Ashmore had four saves for the Garnet.

The Maroons are back in action tomorrow as they face tournament-host Drew University with game time set for 10:00 a.m. The Maroons fell 2-1 to the Rangers last season and are 0-3 all-time in the series.
