Huston's Goal in OT lifts Roanoke past Sweet Briar

Salem, Va. --- Jessica Perkins led Roanoke with two goals in a 3-2 overtime victory over Sweet Briar this afternoon at Kerr Stadium. It was the final home match of the season as the Maroons improved to 3-12, 2-4 in the ODAC while the Vixens dropped to 5-9, 0-6 in the ODAC.
 
The Maroons are now 26-9-1 all-time against the Vixens and was the first overtime match in the series since 2005.
 
The Maroons outshot Sweet Briar, 13-9, 9-6 in shots on goal led by Perkins with all four of her shots were on goal this afternoon. Emily Huston finished with three shots on goal in addition to a goal and an assist to pace Roanoke.
 
Molly McGonegle got the Vixens on board first midway through the first half to give them a 1-0 lead.
 
Perkins scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Huston to tie the contest, 1-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half.
 
McGonegle assisted Melissa Carron to break the tie midway through the second half to give Sweet Briar a 2-1 advantage with 18 minutes remaining.
 
Perkins answered again three minutes later off an assist from Lee Sheldon to make it a 2-2. The Maroon defense held the Vixens and forced their first overtime of the season.
 
In the extra period, Mariah Vietri found Huston open near the box as she scored her second game-winner of the season to give the Maroons their second ODAC-win.
 
Madeline Wilson had six saves for Sweet Briar while Cristina Schicilone finished with four saves for Roanoke. She is one save away from having 100 the season.
 
The women will battle regionally-ranked Lynchburg College on the road in the season-finale. The Maroons are 9-28-1 in the series against the Hornets and haven't won in the last 10 meetings. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
