Field Hockey Maroons Fall to R-MC

SALEM, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College notched a pair of second half goals on the way to defeating Roanoke, 3-1, in the ODAC opener for the Maroons. The win improves the Yellow Jackets to 3-5 overall, 2-0 in conference play. Roanoke falls to 1-6, 0-1.

Tied 1-1 at the break, Randolph-Macon forward Jill Dixon scored off a restart just 2:23 into the second half to put the Jacket's up 2-1. Dixon made her way past a few defenders before slipping a far-post shot past Roanoke keeper, Cristina Schichilone.

About six minutes later, Mary McCarthy supplied R-MC with its winning margin by redirecting a long pass outside the top of the arc from Lindsey Baynham into the RC net.

Roanoke opened the game's scoring just short of nine minutes from the first whistle. From a penalty corner set-piece, freshman Lee Sheldon beat R-MC goalie Ashley Crouch. Senior Emily Horner assisted on the score. The Maroons attempted seven penalty corners on the evening.

Randolph-Macon tied the affair at the 15:12 mark off its own penalty corner, one of 14 attempted by R-MC. Caitlin Titsworth recorded the tally for the Jackets off a pass from Alison Wheeler.

The Maroons return to the field on Friday, September 26, as they welcome Eastern Mennonite University to Salem. The Royals currently boast a 6-1 overall record, 1-0 in ODAC play. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
