Frostburg St. gets past Roanoke in Field Hockey, 4-2

FROSTBURG, Md. --- Roanoke dropped a 4-2 decision to Frostburg St. in non-conference action in Maryland on Sunday afternoon.  The Maroons are now 0-6 on the season while the Bobcats improved to 6-1 on the year.

In a tightly contested game, Roanoke held a slight edge in shots, 16-14 while Frostburg had a slim 10-9 advantage on penalty corners.

Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School)and Mariah Vietri (Jamestown, RI, Rocky Hill)hooked up for the first goal of the game as Pearsall's shot hit the back of the cage within the first five minutes of play to take a 1-0 lead.

Frostburg St. evened things up with less than eight minutes left in the half as Lindsey Frost scored off a penalty corner from Chelsea Smith to even the score at 1-1.  Smith found an open Breanne Russell with just under 30-seconds remaining to go into the half with a 2-1 lead.

With just five minutes into the second half, Jessica Perkins (Abington, PA, Abington)scored off an assist from Abby Bjork (Westborough, MA, Westborough)to tie the score at 2-2.

Seven minutes later, Frostburg took the lead for good as Smith scored off an assist from Brooke Tapman to make it, 3-2.  The Bobcats scored an insurance goal with 17-seconds remaining to seal their sixth win of the season.

Vietri, Perkins and Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien)led the Maroons with a combined 11 shots, 10 on goal.  Frost led the Bobcats with six shots, four on goal.

Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)finished with five saves for Roanoke while Maggie Edwards had 10 for the Bobcats.

The women will take on Virginia Wesleyan at home on Saturday, Sept. 26 in their home ODAC-opener.  Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
