LEXINGTON, Va. --- Roanoke field hockey dropped a 4-0 decision to Washington & Lee in the ODAC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at W&L Turf Field. The loss ends the Maroons season at 2-14 while the Generals improved to 10-6. W&L will advance to the ODAC Semifinals against Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.
The Generals out-shot the Maroons, 24-5 as W&L extended its shutout streak to six games. Roanoke's five shots all came in the second half, as the Generals held an 11-1 advantage on penalty corners.
Alex Caritis put the Generals on the board less than four minutes into the game when Steph Mansey fed her in front of the cage for the game's first goal. Two minutes later, Sallie Armstrong made it 2-0 as she scored her 17th goal of the season. Grace McGee added another unassisted goal at the 29:32 mark to give the Generals a 3-0 halftime lead.
Caritis scored her second goal of the game midway through the second half as W&L built a 4-0 advantage and eventually held on for their 10th win of the season.
Caroline Habliston and Kirsten Kyne combined for the shutout win in goal for the Generals. Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)made eight saves for Roanoke and first-year defender Ashley Fuhrer (Moorestown, NJ, Moorestown )added a defensive save.
