Roanoke Defeats Frostburg St. 4-2 in Season-Opener
Salem, VA- Roanoke defeated Frostburg State, 4-2 in field hockey action Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons now post a record of 1-0, while the Bobcats slip to 0-1.
The win marked the first season-opener that Roanoke has won since 2003. The Maroons improved to 5-2 all-time against the Bobcats. First-year coach Briana Banks picked up her first win in her head coaching debut.
Roanoke was led by Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien)who had a team-high six shots, three on goal, and the opening score. Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School)contributed four shots and a goal. Megan Maier (Westminster, MD, Winters Mill)helped out with two assists.
The Maroons jumped out to an early lead when Maier found Sheldon off of a penalty corner, just two minutes into the game. The Bobcats were able to even the score when Lindsay Frost scored an unassisted goal in the 13th minute. 
Just over 10 minutes later, Roanoke's Julienne Brown (Orange, VA, Foxcroft School)gave the Maroons the lead for good with an unassisted goal of her own for the eventual game-winner.
Six minutes into the second half, Shannon McCarthy (Westport, MA, Tabor Academy)found Pearsall to give the Maroons a two-goal edge. In the 46th minute, Morgan Truncale (Erial, NJ, Timber Creek)found the back of the cage off a pass from Maier. Three minutes later, Frostburg's Breanne Russell scored an unassisted goal to give the final score.
Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)had 12 saves in goal for the Maroons, while Maggie Edwards posted four saves for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats were led by Breanne Russell who had three shots on goal and one score.  Brooke Tapman contributed six shots, three on goal.
Roanoke outshot Frostburg, 19-18, and overcame a 13-9 deficit on penalty corners.
The Maroons will take on Dennison University on the campus of Lynchburg College, this Saturday September 4th. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
