Field Hockey Falls to Denison, 3-0 in Road-Opener
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Denison, 3-0 in its road-opener on the campus of Lynchburg College Saturday morning. The Maroons dropped to 1-1 while the Big Red won their season-opener.

The Maroons battled the Big Red to a scoreless contest in the first 55-minutes of play. Then Denison's Carrie Merrick produced a hat trick in the last 15-minutes of action,  She scored two of the three goals off a rebound shot to lift her team to their first win of the season. Her first goal came off an assist from Hilary Zdanowski for the eventual game-winner.

Denison held the advantage in shots, 28-3, and penalty corners, 11-0. 

Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)
finished with a season-best 18 saves, including 13 in the first half to keep her team in the game. She moved into fifth on the career saves list at Roanoke with 279, passing Sue Ann Stanton '85.

Lianna Hachborn (Portland, ME, North Yarmouth Academy)
produced the only shot on goal for the Maroons, as Jessica Perkins (Abington, PA, Abington) and Shannon McCarthy (Westport, MA, Tabor Academy) each had a shot in the match.

Merrick had nine shots, eight on goal, while teammate Brooke Donovan had six shots, four on goal for the Big Red.

The Maroons will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 11 as they host Shenandoah in non-conference action. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
