Roanoke falls at home to Shenandoah, 3-2
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Shenandoah, 3-2 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons dropped to 1-2 on the season while the Hornets improved their mark at 2-0.
 
With the loss, Roanoke is now 6-2 in the series against Shenandoah. On paper, the Maroons were the better team. They outshot the Hornets, 22-13 and held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
 
Lianna Hachborn (Portland, ME, North Yarmouth Academy) got the Maroons on the board in the second minute of action to take the early lead. She scored off a rebound from her own previous shot from the right side for her first collegiate goal.
 
Shenandoah responded, scoring three unanswered goals over the next 37 minutes of play. Katie Johnson unassisted tally in the 28th minute before Kaitlin Sommer gave the Hornets the lead for good with her goal 58 seconds before halftime.
 
Five minutes into the second half, Sommer found Maria Payne to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage. Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School) scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien) to cut the Hornets lead in half, 3-2 with just over seven minutes remaining. The Maroons had several chances to send the game into overtime in the closing minutes, but was unable to find the back of the cage.
 
Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) finished with seven saves for Roanoke. Sarah Clare had eight for the Hornets.
 
The women return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host Kean University (NJ). The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Kerr Stadium.
