SALEM, Va--- Roanoke fell to Kean University, 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons dropped to 1-3, while the Cougars improved to 3-1 on the season.
Kean jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Cougars held the advantage statistically, outshooting Roanoke, 37-5 and holding a 17-2 edge on penalty corners.
Olivia Triano found Kelsey Brown off a penalty corner just six minutes into play. Kelly Mataya found the back of the cage twice, in the 15th and 69th minute for the Cougars, and Amie Hoch added one of her own in the 22nd minute.
Lianna Hachborn (Portland, ME, North Yarmouth Academy) scored the only goal of the day for the Maroons, her second of the year, with 10 minutes to play in the contest. Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School) added two shots, one on goal, while Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien) contributed with one shot and two defensive saves.
Cristina Schicilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) took the loss in goal for the Maroons with a gutsy effort, recording 17 saves on the day. Lauren Dobbs registered two saves in the game to pick up the win for the Cougars.
Roanoke returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 18 as they host St. Mary's in non-conference action. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
