Maroons Win First Game in Overtime Thriller, 2-1
SALEM - The Roanoke College field hockey team picked up their first win of the season over Stevenson, 2-1 in an overtime thriller.  The Maroons move up to 1-5, 0-0 ODAC while the Mustangs drop to 2-5, 0-0 CAC.

The Mustangs opened up the scoring in the first half at the 24 minute mark as Brittany Martin collected a rebound and placed it in the back of the goal to take the 1-0 lead.  Martin had six shots on the day for Stevenson.

Roanoke answered in the second half when given the opportunity from a penalty corner at the 53 minute mark.  Abby Bjork (Westborough, MA, Westborough), who took the initial hit, recieved a second pass from Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien) and snuck one past the keeper to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team was able to take the lead in the inital 70 minutes, so overtime was required.  Both teams aggressively pushed the tempo early in the overtime period.  In the 72nd minute, Mariel Hunt (Rumsan, NJ, Rumsan Fair Haven) found herself on a breakaway and scored the game winner, ultimately giving the Maroons their first win of the season.

Stevenson outshot the Maroons 20-6.  Roanoke goalkeeper Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) faced 16 shots on goal and saved 14.  Stacy Bechtel (Eldersburg, MD, Liberty) also picked up a defensive save.

The Maroons wil be in action again on Saturday, Sept. 24, as they face Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, VA.  The contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
