The field hockey program has earned its third win over the last four games, the best stretch since winning four-straight in 2004. The three wins this fall are the most in a season for the Maroons since 2005.
The Maroons, who are now 9-4 against the Hornets, broke a two-game series skid against their in-state foe. It was the first meeting with Shenandoah as a member of the ODAC, in addition to the closest margin of victory for RC in the series.
Shenandoah got on the board first early as Sarah DeLuca scored in the sixth minute of action. The Hornets maintained possession throughout most of the first half.
Roanoke tied the contest in the 24th minute of play as Lianna Hachborn (Portland, ME, North Yarmouth Academy) scored a team-best fifth goal of the season off an assist from Shannon McCarthy (Westport, MA, Tabor Academy) penalty corner to make it, 1-1.
The Maroons offense scored the eventual game-winner midway through the second half as Hachborn found Stacy Bechtel (Eldersburg, MD, Liberty) as she put the ball into the left side for her third goal of the season.
Shenandoah outshot Roanoke, 15-13, including 13-11 in shots on goal. Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) totaled 11 saves for the Maroons, while Sarah Clare finished with nine for the Hornets. Laura Stavetski (Wayne, PA, Radnor) also had a defensive save in the final minute of play to secure the win. SU also held a slim 12-10 edge in penalty corners.
Hachborn led Roanoke with six shots on goal, followed by Bechtel who had four shots, two on goal. Amber Van Horn had six shots, five on target for the Hornets, while Justina Ludwig had three shots (two on goal).
The women return to action on the road this Wednesday as they travel to Lynchburg to battle NCAA Div. I Liberty in non-conference play. The Flames are in their first season as a field hockey program. Game time starts at 6 p.m.
