Kelly Finnā??s Late Goal Lifts Maroons over Generals in ODAC Action, 2-1
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Kelly Finn (Fairhaven, NJ, Rumson Fair Haven) goal with just over three minutes remaining gave Roanoke a 2-1 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC Field Hockey action Wednesday evening.  The Maroons improve to 5-10 overall, 3-3 in ODAC play.  The Generals record slips to 6-9, 2-5 in the conference.

For the field hockey program, it was another milestone win, with its 400th win in the 65-year history of the longest women's sport at Roanoke College.  It's also the first over the Generals in seven years, which broke an eight-game skid as the Maroons improve to 5-9 in the series.  The three conference victories are also the most since the 2004 season.

Down 1-0 with just under 16 minutes remaining in regulation, senior Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien) scored the equalizer after fellow senior Abby Bjork (Westborough, MA, Westborough) penalty corner to keep the Maroons alive.  It was Sheldon's third goal of the season.

The contest was scoreless until six-minutes left in the first half when Lizz Dye scored off an assist from Christina Benedetti to give the Generals the lead heading into halftime.

Sheldon led RC with three shots, followed by Shannon McCarthy (Westport, MA, Tabor Academy) with two of her own.  Candice Stefanic totaled four shots (three on goal) to lead WLU.  Dye and Benedetti added two shots on goal each.

WLU held the shots advantage (13-9), including 10-5 in shots on goal.  The Maroons had the edge in penalty corners, 7-6.  Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) finished with nine saves in goal for Roanoke.  Kristen Kyne had three saves for the Generals.

The women will be back at home on Saturday, Oct. 22 as they host Virginia Wesleyan College in its home finale.  It will be senior day for Bjork, Katherine Muhvich (Towson, MD, Towson), Mary Pace (Needham, MA, Berkshire School), Sheldon and Scichilone.  The Maroons are 13-7 against the Marlins, splitting the last four meetings.  The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
