Roanoke Fall Sport Athletes Recognized on 2011 ODAC/StellarOne Fall Sportsmanship Team
FOREST, Va. --- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference is pleased to announce the 2011 ODAC/StellarOne Sportsmanship Teams in each of seven fall sports sponsored by the conference.  This marks the third year the league has recognized these fine student-athletes for their excellence in sportsmanship.

“I am pleased that the conference recognizes student-athletes for their focus on fair play and sportsmanship," explained ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston.  "The conference prides itself on positive sportsmanship and encouraging student-athletes to lead by example. Each one of the honorees has been selected by the coaches in recognition of their conduct in the arena.  My hat is off to these student-athletes - thanking them for the example they set for all of us.”

Men's Cross Country – Tim Smith
Smith, the 2011 ODAC Scholar-Athlete and Runner of the Year, placed second overall at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional meet to earn his bid to the national meet.  At the national championship meet, Smith placed 38th, just three spots shy of All-American honors.  The four-time ODAC Runner of the Week award winner this fall has overcome an early season injury to finish atop the Maroon runners in six meets this fall.  He is the first male runner since 2006 (Eric Johnson) to compete in the national meet.

Women's Cross Country – Leigha Schimmoeller
Schimmoeller, a freshman, placed 18th at the ODAC Championships this fall with a time of 24:54 which was a season-best.  She earned a trip to the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Meet, where she placed 60th, crossing the finish line at 25:18.  She led the Maroons in two meets this fall and second on four occasions behind fellow freshman Grace England, who was the ODAC Rookie of the Year.

Volleyball – MacKenzie Allen
Allen, a freshman, played in 104 games at outside hitter for the Maroons.  She ranked fifth on the team in kills (68) and amassed 178 digs, including a season-high 20 vs. Guilford (9/9).  Allen finished the year third in aces (19) and fourth in blocks (30).

Field Hockey – Kelly Finn
Finn, a sophomore, started in 17 of 18 games played this fall for the Maroons.  The versitle forward/midfielder scored seven goals which tied for the most on the squad.  Finn, who totaled 28 shots, 17 on target last fall, scored two goals against Bridgewater (10/12) and scored the game-winner against Washington and Lee.  It was the first win against the Generals since 2004.

Cindy Suttora – Women's Soccer
Suttora, a junior forward for the Maroons, started in all 21 games and led the women to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2007.  She finished the season with 23 shots and five goals, four of which were game-winners.  Suttora scored a season-best two goals against Eastern Mennonite (10/8).

Nick Georges – Men's Soccer
Georges, a senior midfielder for the Maroons, played in three games for the ODAC Regular Season Champions this fall.  He played in a season-best 12 minutes against Eastern Mennonite (9/30).  He is a Biology major and plans to graduate this spring.

The ODAC has a rich tradition in promoting fair play and good sportsmanship in each sport across the league.  The character of the conference's student-athletes on and off the field is a representation of not only the individuals and teams, but also the institutions they play for.

“All of us at StellarOne Bank are excited to be an official corporate sponsor, touching the lives of so many in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference," said Angela Ross, Chief Branding Officer for StellarOne.
