Field Hockey Earns First ODAC Win, 7-1 Over Sweet Briar
SALEM – The Roanoke College field hockey team picked up its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win on Saturday against Sweet Briar, 7-1.  Allison Denton pieced together a hat trick throughout the 70-minute contest to aid the Maroons in the win.
 
The Maroons now have a record of 2-7 and are 1-2 in ODAC play, while the Vixens are now 0-7 and 0-3 in the ODAC.  Roanoke holds the all-time series lead over Sweet Briar 44-14-4.
 
Sweet Briar opened up the scoring early as Loralei Whitaker found the back of the net just nine minutes in to the first half.  The Maroons responded seven minutes later, Marceline Pike scored the equalizer at 16:19.  The game remained tied until the end of the half, and in the second period is when the Maroons really broke away.
 
Devon Huddleston scored two consecutive goals at the beginning of the half, with the second one being assisted by Piek.  Allison Denton notched her first goal at the 39-minute mark after a long pas from Morgan Rhyne.  Piek got back in to the action just four minutes after the previous goal, giving the Maroons a 5-1 lead.  Denton capped the game for the Maroons with two goals at the 51 and 56-minute marks, to tally a score of 7-1 as the final buzzer went off.
 
Roanoke outshot Sweet Briar 23-1 over the course of the 70-minute game, with Denton leading the team with six shots.  The Maroons almost had as many penalty corners as they did shots, as thy held the advantage 19-1.  Sweet Briar's Brooke Scott played 60 of the 70 minutes and made 10 saves.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, October 3rd as they travel to Bridgewater for ODAC competition.  The contest is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start.
