Field Hockey Falls by Narrow Margin to #6 Mary Washington
SALEM - The Roanoke College field hockey team fell in non-conference action to #6 ranked University of Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The Maroons now have a record of 1-3, while the Eagles remain unbeaten at 7-0.

The last time the Maroons defeated a ranked Mary Washington was in 2001, when Roanoke beat #8 Mary Washington, 2-1 in overtime. This is also the fourth time that the Maroons have played a nationally ranked team in a match that was decided by a difference of one goal.

The match got off to a slow start as neither team got a shot off until the 13th minute. That first shot was a sign of the struggle that would occur between the two teams as Jenna Steele took a shot but was blocked by a diving Candace Fisher. Neither team would find the back of the cage in the first 35 minutes, while Mary Washington held a 8-3 shot advantage over Roanoke.

Mary Washington scored just six minutes into the second half as Jenna Steele was able to slip one past the keeper. That would be the only goal that Mary Washington needed to win the game, though the Maroons put up two shots in the final nine minutes, which came up in a goalie save, as well as a defensive save. Mary Washington came away with the 1-0 victory after 70 minutes of play.

The Maroons finished the game with seven total shots to the Eagles' 21. Shelbi Holloman and Elyse Law each finished the contest with two shots, while Emily McQueen, Kellie Jasinski and Kelly Finn tallied one apiece. Candice Fisher played in the cage for the entire 70 minutes, making 13 saves.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, September 21st as they travel to Union, NJ to face off against Kean University. That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
