SALEM - The Roanoke College field hockey team picked up a big victory over the top team in the ODAC, Virginia Wesleyan, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. Roanoke now has a record of 2-5; 1-0 in ODAC play, while the Marlins sit with a record of 5-2; 1-1 in the ODAC.

Roanoke opened up its ODAC season with this win over Virginia Wesleyan. This is the second consecutive year that the Maroons have bested the Marlins, while Roanoke holds a 16-8 all time record against Virginia Wesleyan.

Roanoke outshot Virginia Wesleyan 9-2 in the first half. The Maroons had multiple opportunities in the first period to take the lead, spending over 75 percent of the half on their offensive end of the field.

The Maroons continued to take the advantage in the second half, but it wasn't until the final minutes of the half that the Marlins started to give Roanoke some trouble. Virginia Wesleyan had seven penalty corners in the second half, five of which were within the final 15 minutes of regulation. The Maroons were able to hold off the Marlins, forcing the game into overtime.

Just 1:19 into the overtime period, during a Roanoke penalty corner, Isabella Lucia took a hard shot at the goal that was deflected in by Shelbi Holloman for the game winner.

The Maroons outshot the Marlins 17-9 in the contest. Holloman led Roanoke in shots with eight, followed by Kelly Finn with five. Candice Fisher played all 71 minutes in goal and tallied four saves.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, October 2^nd as they travel to face Eastern Mennonite University. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
