LEXINGTON - The Roanoke College field hockey team fell in non-conference action to Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon at Washington and Lee University, 5-2. The Maroons now have a record of 2-10, while the Lynx hold a mark of 6-7.
This was the first meeting between Rhodes and Roanoke. Recent ODAC Player of the Week, Shelbi Holloman, tallied Roanoke's first goal and has scored one goal in each of the last three games. She is the current points leader for the Maroons with 12 points, followed by Kellie Jasinski with 10.
The Maroons got on the board early as Shelbi Holloman scored in the sixth minute of the contest to give Roanoke a quick 1-0 lead. Roanoke was able to hold Rhodes scoreless for most of the first half, until Christina Di Felice scored at the 28 minute mark, tying the game at 1-1 just before the half.
Rhodes took a 2-1 lead just minutes into the period. Roanoke was able to equalize with a penalty stroke goal from Kellie Jasinski at the 40 minute mark. The 2-2 tie would hold for just a few minutes as Rhodes Evy Royther found the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead. The Lynx would go on to score two more goals in the second half to win 5-2 over the Maroons.
The two teams played in a shootout of a game, as Rhodes took 26 shots to Roanoke's 16. Shelbi Holloman led the Maroons with seven shots, while Isabella Lucia followed with three. Candice Fisher played all 70 minutes in goal and tallied seven saves.
The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, October 15th as they travel back to Lexington to face off against Washington and Lee in ODAC action. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
