Field Hockey Tops Blazers 2-1 With Late Game Goal
FREDERICK, MD - The Roanoke College field hockey team picked up its first win of the season after defeating Hood College, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons now have a record of 1-2, while the Blazers now sit with a record of 4-2.

Roanoke outshot Hood 7-2 in the first half, but neither team could find the back of the cage during the period. Nine minutes into the second half, the Blazers picked up the first goal of the game. Alexis Briscoe came up the left side, cutting it back to the middle and took a hard shot at the top of the circle for the 1-0 lead.

Roanoke answered Hood's goal 10 minutes later as Shelbi Holloman notched her first goal of the season. Holloman's goal came off of a penalty stroke, tying the game at 1-1 with a little under 16 minutes to play. The contest remained tight towards the end of the second half. It wasn't until the 67th minute with Katerina DeSimone scored the game winner for the Maroons. DeSimone poked a ball through the defense into the cage, after receiving a chip pass from Kellie Jasinski. DeSimone's goal marked the first of her career. The Maroons would hold off the Blazers for the final two-and-a-half minutes to pick up their first win of 2014.

Roanoke held a 13-7 shot advantage over Hood during the contest, with Holloman, Kelsey Palmisano and Kellie Jasinski each finishing with three shots apiece. Lauren Hurley and Kelly Wood aided the Maroons on defense, both picking up defensive saves during the match. Candice Fisher played all 70 minutes in the cage, tallying three saves.

Hood was led in shots by Alexis Briscoe with four, followed by Tayler Piper with two. Laura Lokey notched one defensive saves, while goalkeeper Jessica Sedgwick finished with one save in 70 minutes.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, September 17th as they take on Wilson College on the road. That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
