Field Hockey Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats Bethany 3-2
SALEM - The Roanoke College field hockey team won its fourth game in a row after defeating Bethany College 3-2 on Sunday. The Maroons now have a record of 4-2, while the Bison sit with a mark of 1-5.

The Maroons are off to the program's best start since the 2004 season, where Roanoke went 5-2 to start the season. Pulling together four consecutive wins is another program mark that hasn't been achieved since the 2004 season as well.

Things looked tough for the Maroons early on as Bethany scored the first goal of the game at the 4:52 mark, as Natalie Knauer scored off of a pass from Taylor Solomon. That goal gave the Bison an early 1-0 lead, which held through the remainder of the first half.

It wasn't until 10 minutes into the second period when Roanoke scored its first goal. Kelsey Palmisano scored an unassisted goal to start the flurry for Roanoke at 46:15 into the left side of the cage, tying the game at 1-1. Just two minutes later, Rebecca Schmidt deflected a pass from Isabella Lucia to give the Maroons a 2-1 lead. Palmisano and Lucia were at it again at the 54 minute mark, as Lucia notched her second assist, sending the ball on to Palmisano's stick for the two goal advantage. The Maroons tried to stretch the clock for the remainder of the contest, but Bethany was able to notch one more goal as Taylor Solomon fired an uncontested shot from the top of the circle, pulling the Bison within one. However, time would eventually run out and Roanoke stood victorious 3-2 over Bethany.

The Maroons were led in shots by Kelsey Palmisano, who took five of the team's 14 attempts. She was followed in shots by Shelbi Holloman and Isabella Lucia with three each. Candice Fisher played all 70 minutes in goal and notched 11 saves.

Bethany led in shots 20-14, with Latisha Cuffee taking nine of the shots. She was followed by Taylor Solomon who took four shots, all of which were on goal. Tiffany McCary played the complete game in the cage, tallying three saves.

Roanoke matched Bethany in shots taken during the second half (10), as well as leading in penalty corners 11-8.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesdaay, September 24th as they take on Bridgewater College on the road. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
