Field Hockey Bests Sweet Briar 8-1 on Wednesday
SALEM - The Roanoke College field hockey team defeated Sweet Briar College on Wednesday evening, 8-1. The Maroons now have a record of 5-5 1-2 in ODAC play, while the Vixens are 0-10, 0-2 in ODAC play.

The Maroons get back to .500 on the season after the win over Sweet Briar. Roanoke holds a 46-14-4 all-time record over Sweet Briar, having won 20 consecutive games against the Vixen, dating back to 1986. This is Roanoke's largest margin of victory over Sweet Briar since 2003, when the Maroons were victorious 8-0.

Roanoke tallied six goals over the course of the first half alone. Shelbi Holloman led the team with two goals in the first 35 minutes, scoring the team's second and sixth goals of the night. Holloman's first goal came at 3:34 in the half, less than a minute later after Caroline Peterson scored her second goal of the season. The Maroons third goal was scored by Kellie Jasinski, who found the back of the cage as result of a penalty stroke. Roanoke's fourth and fifth goals came from Emily McQueen and Jacklyn Farides, respectively.

Sweet Briar scored in the 41st minute of the game, as Allison McLamb slotted a ball into the left side of the cage, pulling the Vixens within five, 6-1. Shelbi Holloman tacked on her third goal of the game in the 45th minute, earning her 10th goal of the season, which now makes her the top scorer currently in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. With three minutes to play, Sweet Briar pulled its goalkeeper, which Roanoke took advantage of as Caroline Peterson bookended the game with her second goal of the night. Roanoke picked up its fifth win of the season after the 8-1 win over Sweet Briar College.

The Maroons were led in shots by Shelbi Holloman and Caroline Peterson who took each took six shots. Isabella Lucia finished the contest with five shots on the night. Candice Fisher picked up the win with 35:00 minutes in goal, tallying one save. Ashleigh Hamman played 30 minutes in the cage and led the team with four saves.

Sweet Briar finished with eight shots, led by Allison McLamb, who fired off three. Eve Mergenthaler tallied two shots in the contest as well. Katie Torretti finished the game with 12 saves.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, October 4th as they take on Virginia Wesleyan on the road. That contest is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
