Roanoke fell to W&L 4-3

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 3 | Washington and Lee 4

Records: Maroons 3-2 / 3-2 ODAC | Generals 4-1 / 4-1 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: The Maroons played host to Washington and Lee on Friday night. The matchup of a pair of 3-1 teams under the lights would start just a bit late as Roanoke took a moment to honor their four seniors. After the ceremony, the Generals would score the first two goals of the night just 30 seconds apart from on another to seize control. Down 4-0 the Maroons mounted a furious rally that would see three scores in the final 15 minutes, including one on a last second penalty corner. However, the rally would fall just short as the Generals held on for the 4-3 ODAC win.

Highlights:

  • Prior to the start of the game, seniors Emilee Wooten, Lauren Heffron, Kaylee Collison, and Mallory Wainwright were honored at Kerr Stadium.
  • At the 13:20 mark the Generals would score the first goal of the night. 30 seconds later Grace Weise scored her second for a 2-0 lead.
  • 10 minutes into the second quarter, Washington and Lee added a third score and with just over five minutes before the half, another score made it 4-0 at the break.
  • Neither team would score in the third period as it appeared W&L was going to cruise to the win.
  • However, Roanoke would get on the board when Wooten scored off a pass from Lauren Roth.
  • With just over five minutes to play, the score would get tighter when Caroline Diehl would get behind the goalie and defense to make it a two-goal game.
  • The time was ticking down and Roanoke was awarded a penalty quarter with virtually no time left on the clock. Martha Hurley put the ball in play to Wooten who sent the ball to Heffron for a shot toward the goal that Hurley tipped in to make it a 4-3 final.
  • Hannah Roerden went the distance in goal and recorded seven saves.

Up next: Tuesday will mark the final home game of this abbreviated season for the
Maroons. Roanoke will play host to Ferrum in a 6:00pm start at Kerr Stadium.
