The Short Story: One goal was all the Roanoke College field hockey team needed in a 1-0 shutout win over Wittenberg.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Defense was the name of the game with both teams playing through a scoreless opening 15 minutes.
- The second quarter was looking to be a no goal period as well before Martha Hurley took a pass from Grace Vernarelli to put the Maroons up 1-0 with 1:41 left in the half.
- Despite an offensive barrage and sturdy defensive play by Roanoke, neither team was able to find the back of the cage as the Maroons held on for the 1-0 shutout win.
- The victory marked the first of the season for Roanoke.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The goal by Hurley marked the first first-half goal of the season for the Maroons.
- The assist by Vernarelli was the first assist by the Maroons this season.
- Roanoke out shot the Tigers 22-3 in the game, including 12-1 in the second half.
- The Maroons also took more penalty corners than Wittenberg leading 15-4 in the category.
