The Short Story: The Roanoke College field hockey team opened up ODAC play with a 2-1 win over Eastern Mennonite on Monday evening. The game had originally been scheduled for October 1, but was rescheduled due to weather from hurricane Ian over the weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a scoreless half for both teams as the score remained tied at 0-0 heading into halftime.
  • Grace Vernarelli scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Maroons the lead, 1-0.
  • The Royals then found the back of the cage at 40:10 to level the match at 1-1. The goal marked the first the Maroons had given up in exactly one month; a span that was 409:49 long.
  • Josephine van Leyen responded just over five minutes later with an unassisted rebound goal, which proved to be the game-winner.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The first half was all offense for the Maroons. RC fired 19 shots in the first 30 minutes. They finished the game with 30 total.
  • Roanoke took nine penalty corners to just one for the Royals.
