Game Notes vs. Randolph-Macon ? Men's Basketball

Roanoke (16-4, 8-3 ODAC) will look to stay on the winning track as they take on Randolph-Macon (14-5, 8-2 ODAC) in a pivotal ODAC men's basketball showdown this Wednesday, Feb. 4 in Ashland, Va. This game has ODAC-Tournament seed implications as the Yellow Jackets and Maroons are second and third, respectively in the ODAC Standings. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Series Information
Roanoke holds a 74-67 all-time series advantage over Randolph-Macon. Since 2001, the Yellow Jackets have won 16 of the last 17 meetings. The Maroons ended the Yellow Jackets season in 2006-07 in the ODAC Quarterfinals with a 79-58 victory. This will be the only meeting of the regular season between the two teams.
Last Meeting - Feb. 10, 2008 (75-66 L in Ashland, Va.)
ASHLAND, Va. --- A late run by in the final two minutes sealed the Maroons fate as they fell to Randolph-Macon, 75-66 on Sunday afternoon. Roanoke dropped to 15-6 overall and 9-5 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets improved to 17-4; 11-3 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets have now won 16 of the last 17 meetings between these two teams
It was a tight game throughout, as both were tied in points in the paint (16-16) and second chance points (10-10). The Maroons outscored the Yellow Jackets bench, 28-7 and 15-8 off turnovers. For the game Roanoke shot 42-percent from the floor. They held the Yellow Jackets to 40-percent for the game, but 52-percent in the second half (12-of-23).
The free-throw shooting woes once again continued to be the Maroons Achilles heel, as they went 5-of-13 from the charity stripe. They lost the rebounding battle, 44-35 for the second-straight game. It's the third loss out of their last four games, all in ODAC play.
Roanoke jumped out to a 12-5 lead, their largest of the game as junior Zach Milton scored three of the Maroons first four buckets.
Randolph-Macon took its first lead of the game off a three-pointer by David Carlson to make it 21-19 with 8:36 remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets kept the lead through the rest of half taking a 32-28 advantage into halftime.
The Yellow Jackets started the second half on a 15-5 run to make it a 47-33 score. Jordan Brown and Justin Short sparked the run as both combined for 13 of the first 15 points for R-MC in the second half.
Down 14 with 14:15 remaining in the second half, the Maroons fueled a 17-5 run over the next six minutes to make it a two-point game, 52-50 with just over eight minutes remaining. Ben Shrader hit back-to-back three-pointers while Aaron Tyson and Josh LaPorte hit consecutive buckets of their own to bring the Maroons back in the game.
R-MC responded with a 13-1 run over the next two minutes as Danny Jones capped the run with a three-pointer to give them a 61-53 lead with six minutes remaining.
The Maroons showed great poise and didn't panic as they countered with a 9-1 run over the next three minutes. LaPorte hit two layups, including the one that tied the game, 62-62 for the first time since the first half when it was 24-24 with 2:34 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets ended the game on a 13-4 run, including 5-of-6 from the free throw line to seal their fourth win in a row.
Brown had 22 points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals for Randolph-Macon. Short had 20 points, six rebounds and three assists including 4-of-8 from three-point range. Jones followed their performances with 15 points and six rebounds.
Milton led Roanoke with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Shrader had 11 points and hit three treys, which puts him one away from tying Jared Butler '06 for second all-time in that category. He currently has 158 for his career. LaPorte and junior Curtis Peery had nine points each in addition to seven and eight rebounds, respectively. Tyson came off the bench to chip in eight points.
Last Time Out - Jan. 31, 2009 (86-75 W vs. Lynchburg)
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Lynchburg 86-75 in ODAC men's basketball action Saturday evening at the Bast Center. With the win, the Maroons improved to 16-4 and 8-3 in the ODAC. The Hornets dropped to 3-16, 1-9 in the conference.
Roanoke, ranked #26 in the D3Hoops.com National Poll, overcame Lynchburg shooting 46.7% for the game and being out rebounded, 36-29 by scoring 21 points off 18 Hornet turnovers and outscoring the Lynchburg bench, 35-15. They also made a season-best 30 free-throws and had 10 or more steals for the seventh time this season.
With the win, Roanoke holds a 115-22 series advantage and has won the last 11 meetings. Head coach Page Moir is now 41-3 against the Hornets, 2-0 against former player and LC coach Hilliary Scott '94.
After dropping three of its last four games prior to tonight, the Maroons got back on the winning track as they are 16-4 for the first time since the 1999-00 season. That year Roanoke went 24-5 and won their last ODAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
Lynchburg opened the game with a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes after a Jack Burgess three-pointer. Roanoke countered with an 11-4 run to tie the contest at 13-all after a three-pointer by Melvin Felix with 14:43 left in the half. Felix gave the Maroons their first lead of the game off a lay-up to make it 20-18 at the 11:26 mark.
The lead would change back-and-forth until Parrish Walker scored a lay-up to take the lead for good just before the half. He scored five of the last seven Roanoke points of the half, including a fade away three-pointer off a steal with no time left to give them a 46-39 halftime advantage.
Walker's highlights continued in the second half, scoring the first four points, including a breakaway dunk to cap an 11-0 run and give Roanoke an 11-point lead, 50-39 just three minutes into the half.
It would be enough to keep the Hornets at bay as they didn't closer than seven the rest of the game. The Maroons did this by hitting their free-throws, going 20-of-25 in the second half to win their eighth ODAC game of the season.
Peery set career-highs in points (28-tie) and 18 free-throws made, which is the most in the Div. III era at Roanoke College and third all-time. Frank Allen '71, who is the school's all-time leading scorer, made 20 free-throws on two occasions. He now has 1,243 career points, which passes Bryant Lee '95 for 19th all-time. He is four points shy of passing Charles Small '88 for 18th on the Roanoke career scoring list.
Walker finished with six steals to tie a career-high along with 15 points in the win. The other game with six steals came against Lynchburg in the first meeting of the season. Felix tossed in 12 points while Kendrick Chittock chipped in with eight points and six rebounds to lead the Maroons. Aaron Tyson's two blocked shots moves him into a tie with Josh LaPorte '08 for ninth in single-season blocks. He is one block away of tying Kevinn Hunter '05 for seventh in career blocks.
Lynchburg was led by Steve Echols with 20 points and five rebounds. Burgess tossed in 16 points while KC Mendez finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
Randolph-Macon (14-5, 8-2 ODAC) went 1-1 last week, earning a hard fought win in Lexington over Washington and Lee and dropping a game with Guilford on the road. Justin Short (19.3 ppg) led R-MC in scoring in both games during the week. The senior point guard led all scorers against W&L with 22 points. Versus GC, Short led the R-MC squad with 18 tallies. Short is ranked second in the league in scoring and his 366 points this season give him 1,172 points for his career, ranking him 29th all time on the Jackets' career scoring list. Boris Varela leads the team in rebounding (5.9 rpg)
About the Maroons
Roanoke (16-4, 8-3 ODAC) defeated Lynchburg, 86-75 and lost to Guilford, 77-72 in two ODAC contests last week. The team's 16-4 record is its best since the 1999-00 season. Curtis Peery scored 46 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in two games last week. He posted career-highs of 28 points and 18 free-throws
made against LC. The 18 free-throws made is the most by a Roanoke player in the Div. III-era (1979-pres.). Only Frankie Allen '71, who is the state's all-time leading scorer (College Div.), had more with 20 on two occasions.
Record Watch
Senior forward Aaron Tyson is now ninth all-time at Roanoke in career blocked shots. He comes into tonight's game with 67 for his career, just one shy of tying Kevinn Hunter '05 for seventh all-time. Curtis Peery passed both Bryant Lee '95 and Charles Small ‘88 with 1,243 career points to move into 18th on Roanoke's career scoring list. Peery needs six more free-throws made to move into the top-10 all-time, tying Nathan Hungate '98 (285).
Head Coach Page Moir
In addition to leading the team to a 16-4 overall record, Page Moir owns a 348-185 all-time record as Roanoke's head coach. During his 20 years at the helm, Moir has led the Maroons to three Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships (1994, 96, 00) and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament six times (1994-97, 99-01). He is the winningest coach in Roanoke history by wins and third in winning percentage. He is first among active ODAC coaches in wins and conference wins (222).
Roanoke Basketball History
Roanoke College men's basketball program is currently in its 95th year of existence. In those years, the Maroons have compiled a 1,275-754 overall record. Roanoke is one of 58 Division III teams that have eclipsed 1,000 all-time wins. The Maroons are currently 521 games above .500 and would have to go 0-25 over the next 21 years to fall to an even all-time record. Entering the 2006-07 season, Roanoke was 15th on the all-time victories list in Division III and 17th on the all-time winning percentage list (.628). They have won 19 conference championships (10 ODAC, 9 Mason-Dixon), Advanced to the NCAA Tournament 19 times including four National Quarterfinals, two National Semifinals and the 1972 National Championship. They have produced 14 All-Americans, seven All-South Region (since 1978) and 15 All-ODAC First-Team players.
