Draper Drops 33 Points as Maroons Win 82-66 Over Shenandoah

The Short Story: Leading by just four at the half, the Roanoke men's basketball team busted open the game in the second half en route to an 82-66 win over Shenandoah on Wednesday evening in Winchester. Kasey Draper had a season-high 33 points to lead four Maroons in double-figures.   

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hornets opened the game with a three-pointer and maintained a lead until Draper made a three at 14:55, part of a 19-point first half, to put the Maroons ahead 15-12. Shenandoah would retake the lead for the last time on a Binwi Bihai layup at 11:43, 23-21. Roanoke responded with a three-pointer by Zach Rosenthal at 11:26 putting the Maroons back on top for good.
  • Roanoke would lead by as many as seven with the Hornets tying the score one more time before the break. The Maroons scored a pair of baskets by Justin Kuthan and Efosa U-Edosomwan in the final minute to have a 39-35 lead heading into the locker room.
  • Despite SU pulling within three at 12:51 with the score 50-47, Roanoke kept the pressure on with a 10-0 run to give them a 13-point lead, 60-47. Both teams struggled to score for a few minutes but picked it back up as they went on to trade baskets with Roanoke scoring 22 points in the final 10 minutes and the Hornets scoring 19.
  • Shenandoah missed its final two shots giving the Maroons the 82-66 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Draper's 33 points were one shy of his career-high of 34 from last year against Virginia Wesleyan. In addition to his 33 points, U-Edosomwan finished with 17 points and game-high eight rebounds. Both Kuthan and Rosenthal finished with 14 points.
  • The Maroons led Shenandoah in rebounds (35-29), points off turnovers (15-8), points in the paint (28-16), and bench points (32-9).

  • The Maroons remain on the road on Saturday, February 11 when they travel to No. 2 Randolph-Macon. The rematch with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled for 2 p.m.
