Roanoke falls in Overtime to Randolph, 81-76
SALEM, Va. --- Randolph hit back-to-back three-pointers and eight-straight free throws down the stretch to defeat Roanoke, 81-76, in overtime at the Bast Center Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 6-11 overall, 3-5 in the ODAC. The Wildcats improved to 9-8, 3-5 in conference play.
Roanoke shot 38.8% from the floor, but shot a season-best 90% from the free throw line. Randolph shot 52.7% from the floor, including 62.5% in the second half and hit 10-of-12 from the line in overtime. The Wildcats outrebounded Roanoke, 41-29, which led to a 38-28 points in the paint advantage.
Roanoke had what would have been a game-winning layup by Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)called off with two-seconds left in regulation. A turnover by Randolph gave Walker a second opportunity as his half court shot went off the right side which sent the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Roanoke was in control as Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School), Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)and Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave)combined for six free throws to make it a four-point lead with 3:18 to go.
Randolph took the lead for good with an 8-0 run to make it, 75-69, with :51 seconds remaining. The Wildcats held the Maroons off, hitting 8-of-10 from the line in the final minute to break a five-game skid.
Chittock scored a career-high 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)chipped in 13 makers and four assists while Poindexter tossed in a season-best 13 counters. Walker added seven points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Maroons.
Pete Hamilton scored a game-high 21 points and a team-best six rebounds, shooting 4-of-8 from three-point range. Colton Hunt had 18 points, followed by Derrick Woods-Morrow and Jason Rutschman with 11 each.
The men return to action Saturday as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
