Men's Basketball Falls to Randolph-Macon 87-62 in ODAC Action
SALEM - The Roanoke Men's Basketball team matched Randolph-Macon shot for shot in the opening of the first half, but were ultimately unable to keep up the pace falling to the Yellow Jackets, 87-62 on Wednesday. The Maroons fall to 5-13, 1-8 in ODAC play while the Yellow Jackets rise to 16-3, 9-2 ODAC.

Randolph-Macon outshot Roanoke from the field 50.7% to 39.6%, while the Maroons held the edge at the charity stripe 23-12. Roanoke also outrebounded Randolph-Macon 37-36, and the Yellow-Jackets forced the Maroons to turnover the ball 24 times to their 13.

Despite the loss, Roanoke still leads the all time series 74-73. Randolph-Macon has won the last eight meetings between these two teams.

Roanoke and Randolph-Macon battled back and forth in the first half. While the score was tied five times in the first 10 minutes, the Maroons were never able to take the lead. The last time the score was tied was at 17-17 when Kwasi Amponsah knocked down a jumper.

At half, Randolph-Macon led Roanoke 39-26. The Yellow Jackets also led in field goal percentage, 52% to 38% and turnovers 15-5. Kwasi Amponsah led the Maroons with 11 points entering the locker room, while Daniel Eacho pulled down five boards.

Despite trailing at half by 13, the Maroons were able to hold the ODAC Player of the Week, Andre Simon to just two points in the first half. Lamar Giggetts led the Yellow Jackets with nine points after the first stanza.

Randolph-Macon opened the second half with a three-pointer from Adam Desgain. However, Maroons rattled off 9-0 run capped off by a steal and a dunk by Amponsah to cut the Yellow Jacket's lead to seven, 42-35.

That spark from the Maroons did not last long as Randolph-Macon went on a 9-1 streak of their own, pushing their lead to 15, 51-36.

Zach Barrett knocked down a three-pointer at the end of a Roanoke 7-2 spurt with 12:55 to go in the game to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to nine, 55-46.

However, Randolph-Macon started to hit their stride in the second half. Through the eight minute mark, Randolph-Macon had extended it's lead to 22, 71-49.

Roanoke was unable to bridge the gap over the final minutes, ultimately falling in the end 87-62.

Amponsah led the Maroons with 19 points, his 17th consecutive game scoring in double-figures. He was also 7-10 from the free throw line. Eacho finished the contest with a career high in rebounds with nine to go along with eight points.

Lamar Giggetts of Randolph-Macon finished with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds, completing a double-double. Just behind Giggetts was Calvin Croskey who totaled 12 points in the effort.

The Maroons will return to action on Saturday, January 28th, as they travel to Harrisonburg to face Eastern Mennonite in ODAC action. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM
