Maroons Fall in Their First Game of V-Foundation Classic, 86-64

SALEM - The Roanoke men's basketball team faced off against #13 ranked Emory, who had been victorious in game one of the V-Foundation Classic over Ferrum 81-67. The Maroons put up a battle against the Eagles but in the end were not able to pull out the win, falling 86-64.

In the first contest ever between the two teams, Emory and Roanoke went back and forth to a 5-5 tie, but at the 17:51 mark, the Eagles started on a 12-2 run fueled by nine points from Jake Davis. Davis finished the first half with a team high 17 points and three rebounds. Emory's leading scorer in 2010-11, Austin Claunch (16.5 ppg), tallied ten in the stanza.

Roanoke spread the ball around in the first half, with Logan Singleton picking up seven points, followed by Kwasi Amponsah and Jack Hamilton with three and four other Maroons with two.. The Maroons entered the locker room at half down 42-21

The Eagles opened up the scoring in the second half, with Davis continuing where he left off in the first. Hamilton and Clay Lacy returned the favor with back to back baskets at 13:15. However, Emory continued its run and with 13:14 left in the game, the Eagles ran off a 13-3 run that ended at 9:19 with a score of 78-40. Alexander Weant put a halt to the run with a basket from a nifty give and go from Stefan Vulevic.

Roanoke stayed determined through the end of the game, finishing on a 22-6 run. But the final hustle wasn't enough, as the Eagles headed back to Atlanta with an 86-64 victory.
Singleton led the Maroons with 11 points, while Hamilton pulled down a team high five rebounds. Vulevic and Hamilton finished the contest with nine points. Davis led the Eagles with 19 points, followed by Claunch with 16.

Emory outshot Roanoke 46 percent to 42 percent, and hit 44 percent of their shots from behind the arc. Roanoke picked up nine steals to Emory's eight, including three from Vulevic in the Maroons' final run.

Roanoke will return to action tomorrow afternoon to face Ferrum in the final game of the V-Foundation Classic in the Bast Center. The contest is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
