Maroons Fall To Lynchburg in Late Game Rally
LYNCHBURG – The Roanoke College men's basketball team fell to a rallying Lynchburg College on Wednesday night, 82-73 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.  The Maroons now have a record of 6-7, 0-5 in the ODAC, while the Hornets sit with a mark of 10-4, 3-2 in ODAC play.
 
The Maroons crashed the boards hard during the contest, pulling down 50 rebounds in the game.  It was Roanoke's second highest rebounding game, just behind the 51 in the 82-74 win over Frostburg state on December 30th.  Daniel Eacho and Cameron Smith combined for 30 of the night's rebounds, with Daniel Eacho grabbing 16.  Smith's 14 are a career high for the sophomore, breaking a mark of 12, set on January 11th.
 
The two teams played evenly for the first four minutes of the first half, trading baskets back and forth.  Julian Ramirez and Eacho each made layups in the fifth minute to give the Maroons a four point 10-6 lead.  Over the next four minutes, the Maroons went on a 11-4 lead, led with four points from Marcus Scott.  With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Lynchburg brought its deficit back down to five with four points from Alex Graves, an a jumper from Austin Arnold.  The Hornets got within four by the eight minute mark, with a Daniel Rowe free throw, making the score 25-21.
 
By the time the clock hit 4:30, Lynchburg had finished a 10-6 run to tie the game at 31-31.  But, the Maroons started making shots down the stretch as John Fitchett drained a pair of three pointers, while Smith, Eacho and Ramirez added two points each.  By the time the teams hit the locker room at the half, the Maroons led 43-36 over the Hornets.
 
Roanoke put its foot on the gas pedal in the opening moments of the second half, as the team outscored Lynchburg 8-2 in the first three minutes.  With 17:11 to play, Roanoke led by 14, 51-37, its largest advantage of the game.  Cameron Smith hit a layup at 10:20 to put the Maroons up by nine, 61-52, but Lynchburg started to make a comeback.  Manny Hernandez and Austen Arnold combined for an unanswered seven points, pulling the Hornets within two of the Maroons.  Roanoke spread out its lead again, but with 3:02 to play, Burnett hit a three pointer to give Lynchburg its first lead of the half, 69-68.  Over the final three minutes, the Hornets held the Maroons to just four points, as Lynchburg won the contest, 83-72
 
Eacho also was the Maroons leading scorer on the night, tallying 19 points, shooting 9-16 from the field.  Julian Ramirez finished with 16 points, dishing out a team high six assists, and knocking down 8-of-9 free throws from the charity stripe.  Also in double-digits for Roanoke were John Fitchett and Smith.  Fitchett scored 11 points, hitting the Maroons' two lone three pointers.  Smith tallied 10 points with thee assists and a steal.
 
Roanoke and Lynchburg shot a near identical 38 percent from the field each, while the Hornets held the advantage from behind the arc.  Roanoke outrebounded Lynchburg 50-41, as well as dishing out 20 assists to the Hornets' 13.  Lynchburg benefited on the evening from 22 points off of turnovers, as well as 44 points coming off of the bench.
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, January 18th as they face off against Bridgewater College.  On that day, there will be a Maroon Club reception for the men's and women's doubleheader against Bridgewater.  The reception, hosted by Ben Halterman '01 and Jeff Smith, will take place at Boitnot Hall during halftime of both events and between games as well.  For more information on the event, click here.
