#11 Marlins Top Maroons on the Road in Saturday ODAC Action
VIRGINIA BEACH – The Roanoke College men's basketball team fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon, taking a loss to #11 ranked Virginia Wesleyan 84-66.  The Maroons now have a record of 7-12, 2-8 in ODAC play, while the Marlins are 16-3, 8-2 in the ODAC.
 
Andrew Daniels led the team in scoring with 15 points, hitting 3-6 from behind the arc.  He also led the Maroons in steals, notching three over the Saturday contest.  Daniel Eacho tallied 12 points going 6-9 from the field.  He also finished with four rebounds.  Cameron Smith put together a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, topping the Maroons in the latter category.  Julian Ramirez topped the squad in five.
 
Daniel Eacho scored the first points for the Maroons in the opening moments of the first half.  The #11 ranked Marlins quickly claimed the lead from the Maroons, as Khory Moore tallied 10 of the first 14 points for Virginia Wesleyan.  At the 14:25 mark, the Marlins led 14-8.  VWC wen ton to score eight more unanswered points to take a 14 point advantage at the 11:30 mark in the first half.  Roanoke started chipping away at the deficit, as Joey Miller, Ramirez and Smith combined for seven points, pulling the Maroons back within nine, 24-15 with 7:15 to play.  Roanoke stayed within 10 points, but the Marlins closed the final four minutes of the first half with four baskets all three-pointers, leading by 16, 38-22 entering halftime.
 
The Marlins scored the first four points of the second half, taking their largest lead of the game, 42-22. Roanoke quickly responded with Andrew Daniels knocking down a trey, followed by a Ramirez trey, followed by a Ramirez layup to get back within 15, 42-27.  Roanoke scoring continued to eat away at the Marlin lead, as Daniels, Eacho, Ramirez and Alex Weant all scored to get within 13, 48-35 with 13:59 to play.  After a couple of VWC baskets, Andrew Daniels hit back to back three-pointers, getting the Maroons within 11.  Eacho cut the deficit to single digits after a jumper at 10:23, as Roanoke trailed 52-43. Roanoke continued to battle through the second half, but the nationally ranked Marlins' lead held steady, as they continued to hit three-pointers, distancing themselves from the Maroons, including three treys in the final three minutes.  Roanoke fell to #11 Virginia Wesleyan 84-66 on Saturday.
 
Virginia Wesleyan's Nick Doyle came of the bench to lead all players in scoring with 24 points, going 6-8 from behind the arc on Saturday.  Khory Moore was the only starter in double-digits, tallying 20 points off 7-16 from the field.  Breven Lyons and Brandon Michael scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Kaelin Poe topped the Marllins with nine rebounds.
 
Virginia Wesleyan led the Maroons in shooting, going 46.8 to 42.6 percent from the field.  The Marlins also led in three point shooting, 42.4 to 28.6 percent.  Roanoke held the advantage in rebounds (42-37), while VWC led in assists 17-9.  38 of Roanoke's 66 points came from the paint, while 48 of the Marlins' 84 points came off the bench.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 4th as they travel to take on Shenandoah University.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
