Nunley Announces Men's Basketball Coaching Staff

Salem, Va. -- Roanoke College Men's Basketball Coach Clay Nunley announced his coaching staff on Friday.

Nunley who took over the reins of the Maroon program in April has appointed Matt Griggs, Phil Miron and former RC standout Brad Dunleavy '01 to his first staff as Roanoke Head Coach.

Griggs has spent the last two seasons on Pat Kelsey's staff at Winthrop. No stranger to Division III athletics, Griggs is a 2013 graduate of Centre College in Danville, KY where he earned a bachelor's degree in education. The Cincinnati, OH native was a member of the men's basketball team and appeared in 108 consecutive games as well as being the team captain and a three-time conference academic honor roll member. In his four years at Centre, Griggs and his team won three conference championships and participated in the NCAA Division III national tournament three times as well.

"Matt is a promising young coach with a bright future," said Nunley.  "He was very impressive in the interview process and comes highly recommended from some outstanding coaches.  He's excited to invest in our student-athletes at Roanoke to help them have great experiences and reach their full potential, and he will be an asset to our basketball program and community."

A fixture in the AAU and high school basketball community, Miron has served as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach at Roanoke's Hidden Valley High School since 2012. Miron got his start in the AAU circuit heading the East Coast Scholar Athletes from 1995 to 2008. Miron has also served as head coach of the Tennessee Travels AAU squad and the West Virginia Wildcats Select AAU team.

"Phil has been a close friend of mine for over a decade.  I had the privilege of coaching several of his former players during my time at Randolph, and they weren't just talented players who had been coached and prepared well for the college level, they were high character individuals who were a lot of fun to be around," said Nunley.  "Coach Miron is passionate about coaching and helping others, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with him here at Roanoke."

Following a standout career at RC that saw him score 1,079 points during his four years and was named an Honorable Mention All-American as a senior, Dunleavy broke into the coaching ranks as a teacher and coach at Roanoke's Patrick Henry High School. Dunleavy then served as an assistant coach at ODAC rival Virginia Wesleyan. He helped VWC to a combined 145-44 record, six NCAA Tournament appearances. Dunleavy was a member of the Marlins 2006 National Championship team and their 2007 National Runner-Up squad.

"I have great respect for Brad, as we competed against each other while he was an assistant at conference member Virginia Wesleyan," said Nunley.  "During that time, I got to know him better and held him in high regard for the job he did as a young coach.  As an alum and a former outstanding player here at Roanoke, he is passionate about Roanoke basketball, and I am privileged to have him join our staff."

Nunley and his staff inherit a team that went 19--7 overall last season and return three starters from that team.
