The Basics
Score: Roanoke 49 | Ferrum 48
Records: Maroons 2-1, 2-0 ODAC | Panthers 1-3, 0-2 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Prior to the tip with Ferrum College, the Roanoke men's basketball team took a moment to honor their lone senior, Max Menzel. After the ceremony the Maroons would race out to a nine point edge before a Ferrum rally made it a one point game at the half. Six lead changes and six ties later, a Roanoke hoop with 2.4 seconds to play would allow the Maroons to survive, 49-48.

How it Happened:

  • Menzel won the opening tip and Roanoke took the lead when Tripp Greene found Kasey Draper for a three-point basket. Draper and Greene would combine for the next seven points as RC held a 10-5 advantage five minutes into the game.
  • Greene would go on a four-point run of his own to give Roanoke it's largest lead of the evening, 18-11, with less than seven minutes to play in the first half.
  • However, a 12 point Panther surge would see Ferrum take their first lead of the night with 2:51 on the clock. A Draper jumper with :06 to go would make it a one-point Panther lead at the break.
  • Efosa Edosomwan and Ethan Rohan would allow RC to retake the lead out of the half. But Ferrum would answer with an 8-0 run as the two teams would go back and forth.
  • Roanoke would enjoy as much as five point edge before the visitors would once again mount a rally to tie the game at 46-46 with one minute left on the clock.
  • Rohan would pick up back-to-back steals and then record a blocked shot to keep the game tied heading into the final 20 seconds.
  • Draper took a pass from Edosomwan and drew a foul, driving to the basket. The sophomore hit one of two to give the Maroons the advantage with 16 seconds to play.
  • James Smith Jr. hit a jumper on the baseline to put Ferrum back in front with :08 on the clock.
  • After a Roanoke timeout, Trent Dawson got the ball to Draper in the backcourt. With a head of steam, Kasey took it all the way to the basket and banked in a layup over a Ferrum defender with 2.4 ticks remaining.
  • The Panthers took a timeout to set up a last full court attempt, but the final shot was after the buzzer and the Maroons held on for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win.
  • Draper posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Edosomwan added nine points and four steals while Rohan finished with six points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
  • Smith Jr. led Ferrum with 13 points and six rebounds while Darius Kemp came off the bench to score 11.

Up next: The Maroons were originally scheduled to travel to Shenandoah on Saturday, but due to a venue conflict, the Hornets will visit the Cregger Center for a 7:00pm tip.
