Draper's Double-Double Leads Maroons Over Lynchburg, 76-70

The Short Story: A double-double by Kasey Draper helped propel the Roanoke men's basketball team to a 76-70 ODAC win over Lynchburg on Wednesday evening at the Bast Center Gym on campus.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hornets took their only lead of the game 11 seconds into the contest on a layup at 19:49. Roanoke responded with a 15-3 run over the next four minutes, capped by a Joshua McClary dunk, to jump out to a 15-5 lead at 15:46. A Zach Rosenthal three with 13:30 on the clock pushed the Maroons' lead up to 20-8.
  • Roanoke would lead by as many as 14 thanks to a Rosenthal jumper with 4:57 left in the first half. Lynchburg would pull within 10 points, but had to settle for a 42-29 Maroons lead heading into the halftime locker room.
  • The first five minutes saw the two teams trade baskets with Roanoke having a 55-40 lead with 14:30 on the clock. With the Hornets pulling within 12 with just under 13 minutes left, the Maroons used a quick three by Joshua Morse and a jumper by McClary to take their biggest lead at 60-43 with 11:58 left on the clock.
  • With the Maroons leading 64-48 with 9:02 left, Lynchburg went on an 8-0 to pull back within single digits for the first time since late in the first half. The Hornets would whittle down the lead to five points with 2:30 remaining and within three with 1:08 left in the game. A Rosenthal three with 39 seconds left put the lead back up to six as the two teams would trade free throws to close out the game with the Maroons sealing their 76-70 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Both teams hit nine three-pointers and seven of 14 free throws, but the Maroons hit three more two-pointers to outshoot the Hornets.
  • Roanoke nearly doubled up Lynchburg in rebounds, 46-28 while also leading in assists (14-12), second-chance points (22-10), and points in the paint (40-28).
  • Draper secured his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Rosenthal led all scorers with 17 points and was one of five Maroons in double figures with Draper's 12 as well as Justin Kuthan's 15 points, McClary's 13 points, and Efosa U-Edosomwan's 10 points.
