Maroons Drop Pair To Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday
DALEVILLE – The #12 ranked Roanoke College softball team dropped a pair of games to #22 ranked Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, 6-0 and 7-3.  The Maroons now have a record of 28-9; 14-4 ODAC, while the Marlins sit with a mark of 34-6; 18-2 ODAC.
 
The Marlins only scored in the first three innings of the game, which was enough to defeat the Maroons.  Kristina Karagiorgis hit an RBI double to right center field, plating Tori Higginbotham.  In the second inning, the Marlins scored four runs off of a pair of RBI base hits and walks, scored four runs in the top of the second.  In the top of the third inning, the Marlins scored their final run as Kayla Dost was plated on an infield error.  Virginia Wesleyan went on to defeat the Maroons 6-0 in the first game.
 
Leona Rainey had two of the Maroons three hits, going 2-2 on the day.  The other hit for Roanoke came from Kelly Higbie.  Stephanie Clark was tabbed with the loss, giving up five runs in just 1.2 innings of work.
 
The Marlins were led by Kayla Dost and Andrea Shannon, who had two hits each in the game.  Tori Higanbotham and Dost finished with a team high two runs in the game.  Mackenzie Creech picked up the victory, throwing a complete game, giving up just three hits and striking out 10.
 
In the second game, Virginia Wesleyan scored again in the first inning, as Tory Higginbotham scored on a wild pitch.  Roanoke took its first lead in the game in the bottom of the first as Hollee Warlitner hit a two RBI double to left center field, plating Alea Bier and Leona Rainey.  After the first inning, Roanoke led 2-1.  The top of the third was a big inning for the marlins as they scored four more runs off two RBI singles, a walk and a fielders choice.  After the third inning, the Marlins took a 5-2 lead.
 
The Marlins scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, extending their lead to 7-2.  Roanoke had one more chance to make up the five run differential, as Rhea Schleicher scored on an error, cutting the deficit to four, 7-3.  However that would be the final run that the Maroons scored as Virginia Wesleyan won 7-3 in game number two. 
 
The Maroons were led again by Rainey who went 2-4 on the afternoon.  Rainey, Schleicher and Bier scored one run each while Warlitner had a team high two RBIs.  Stephanie Clark was tabbed with the loss, giving up five runs off four hits in 2.1 innings of work.
 
Va. Wesleyan was led by Tori Higginbotham and Season Dailey, who finished with two hits each.  Higginbotham finished with a team high two runs, while Kayla Dost had two RBIs.  Kristina Karagiorgis picked up the win, giving up just two runs off four hits and striking out two.
 
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, April 21st as they take on Randolph-Macon in the ODAC regular season finale.  That contest, which is being played at the Botetourt Softball Complex, is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
