Softball Closes Season After Ferrum Doubleheader
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball closes its 2014 season with a pair of losses to Ferrum College on Monday evening.  The Maroons finish the year with a record of 11-26, 6-14 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.  The Panthers have tallied a 25-13 record on the year.
 
Monday's doubleheader served as the final games for Roanoke's lone senior, Stephanie Clark.  Clark finished the season with a .303 batting average, with 36 hits, 22 runs scored, four doubles, nine RBIs and 48 total bases.  As a pitcher, she struck out 68 batters in 100 innings pitched, posting an era of 4.20.  Over her time at Roanoke College, she ranks third in all-time assists, as well as third in single season doubles, hitting 17 in 2012.
 
Ferrum opened the contest scoring three runs in the top of the first.  Roanoke responded by putting up four of their own, with four RBI singles.  Clark started the run with an RBI hit, scoring Taylor Sutherland.  Jena Pendleton, Ashley Crouch and Kaci Frick followed suit with RBI singles of their own to take a 4-3 lead over Ferrum.
 
Roanoke held the lead until the top of the fifth, when a bases loaded walk scored Ferrum's Karly Thompson, tying the game at 4-4.  The Panthers scored three more runs in the top of the sixth, with an RBI single from Miyana Ross and a two RBI double from Thompson.  Ferrum picked up the win in game one, 7-4.
 
Roanoke was led in hitting by Jenna Pendleton and Ashley Crouch, who each went 2-3 in the game.  Roanoke's four runs came from Taylor Sutherland, Sarah Groft, Clark and Pendleton.  Clark also pitched the complete game, giving up seven runs while striking out three batters.
 
Of the Panthers' 11 hits, Karly Thompson led the team with three, scoring two runs with two RBIs.  Aiyana Lew also scored twice, while Kylene Culler finished with two RBIs.  Amanda Roberts earned the win in 6.1 innings of work, giving up four runs, striking out one.
 
In the second game, Ferrum led off the first inning with five runs, capped off by a home run by Kylene Culler.  The Panthers added another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Thompson, going ahead 6-0.  Roanoke put a run up on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second from Emily Lawrence.
 
Ferrum continued to add runs in the top of the fourth, scoring five runs, including three off of a Lindsey Slover double to center field.  After the top of the foruth, Roanoke trailed 11-1.  The Maroons staved off a shortened game after Emily Lawrence hit an RBI single that scored Alexis Roop in the bottom of the fourth.  The Maroons put up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Ellen Best was tabbed with an RBI, scoring Clark, while Roop reached on an error, as Higbie crossed the plate.
 
Roanoke's final run came as Ana Arriaga brought home Clark for the Maroons fifth run of the game.  Ferrum won game number two, 11-5.
 
Roanoke was led in hitting by Stephanie Clark, who went 4-4 on the day with two runs scored.  Higbie, Roop and Lawrence all scored one run each for the Maronos, while Emily Lawrence had two RBIs.  Higbie was tabbed with the loss, striking out seven batters.
 
Ferrum was led by Karly Thompson, who hit 3-4 in the game, scoring two runs.  Aiyana Lew went 2-2 with three runs scored.  Emily Taylor earned the win in 4.2 innings, giving up four runs, striking out two and giving up a home run.
