Softball Wins One in Second Day of Triangle Classic

Softball Wins One in Second Day of Triangle Classic
RALEIGH, NC - The Roanoke College softball team split a pair of contests for the second day in a row, falling to #3 Salisbury University 9-0, and defeating William Peace University 6-1. The Maroons now have a record of 2-4 on the season.

The Maroons defeated both of the host schools over the weekend, besting Meredith College on Saturday, 8-5, and then defeating William Peace 6-1. This was also the first of two times Roanoke will face off against #3 ranked Salisbury, as they will face off against the Seagulls on Friday, in the first game of the Beach Blast Tournament.

In Roanoke's game against Peace, the Maroons got on the board quickly in the first inning. Taylor Sutherland reached on a single in the first at-bat of the game. Rhea Schleicher followed with a double, sending Sutherland to third. Two batters later, Jenna Pendleton hit a two RBI single, plating Sutherland and Schleicher and taking a 2-0 lead over the Pacers. After a three-up, three-down bottom of the first for Peace, the Maroons got back on the board in the top of the second. Rachel Gulliams walked after Autumn Hill reached on a single, putting two runners on the base paths. Sutherland hit an RBI double, plating Hill and putting the Maroons ahead by three, 3-0.

The Maroons were back at it in the fourth, as Sarah singled as the second batter of the inning. Guilliams followed up two batters later with an RBI double, allowing Groft to score Roanoke's fourth run of the game. The Maroons got out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth, allowing no runs despite the Pacers loading the bases. Roanoke took that momentum into the top of the fifth. Ellen Best reached first on an error, which also allowed Rhea Schleicher to score from second base. Stephanie Clark advanced home from third on a wild pitch, scoring the Maroons second run of the inning and the sixth of the game.

The Pacers would only score one run in the game, as Heather Dindinger hit an RBI single allowing Taylor Hains to cross the plate. The run cut the deficit to five, but that was the last run of the game as Roanoke picked up the 6-1 victory over William Peace.

Taylor Sutherland, Rhea Schleicher and Rachel Guilliams each finished the game with two hits each. Schleicher tallied a team high two runs, while Pendleton led the squad with two RBIs. Stephanie Clark (1-2) picked up her first win of the season, giving up just one run on seven hits, striking three.

Taylor Hains led the Pacers with two hits, while five other players had one hit each. Heather Dindinger finished with Peace's lone RBI. Dindinger was also tabbed with the loss in the circle, giving up six runs off 10 hits, striking out two batters.

*Information on the Salisbury game will be posted as the information becomes available.*

The Maroons return to action on February 28-March 1 as they play in the Beach Blast Tournament at Virginia Beach. The Maroons will take on #3 Salisbury, Mary Washington, SUNY-Old Westbury, and Washington College.
