The Lead: Hannah Marshall allowed just three hits as Christopher Newport topped Roanoke 5-2 in the opening game of the doubleheader.

How it Happened
  • Marshall was locked in a pitchers dual with RC's Teresa Wagner with neither hurler allowing a run through the first five innings.
  • In the top of the sixth, CNU's Leah Andrews doubled to start the inning and went to third on single by Rachael Shiflett. Scoop Simon with an RBI single to make it 1-0.
  • A sacrifice fly off the bat of Tori Clarke made it 2-0 and CNU took advantage of an RC error to make it 3-0.
  • A Simon single scored two the next inning to make it 5-0 Captains.
  • RC rallied for a pair of runs in its last at bat, taking advantage of a pair of CNU errors to make it 5-2, but that would be as close as it would get.
  • Wagner (1-2) took the loss after going 5.1 innings and giving up three runs on six hits. Taylor Asimakopoulos threw 1.2 innings in relief, surrendering two runs.

The Lead: Roanoke rallied from a six run deficit but came up just short as No. 3 Christopher Newport held on for a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

How it Happened
  • CNU loaded the bases with one in the first inning on a Brittany Walters RBI single, a fielder's choice and a Sarah Clark RBI single that made it 3-0.
  • A Simon RBI double in the second inning made it 4-0 and CNU tacked on two more to go up 6-0 after three and a half innings.
  • RC scored in the bottom of the fourth inning when Taylor Carter singled to open the inning and stole second base with one out. Katie Smith singled to move Carter to third before she came home on a Becca Wenger sacrifice fly to make it 6-1.
  • The score stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Maroons loaded the bases with one out.
  • The Maroons used a fielder's choice and a wild pitch to make it 6-3 before a Megan Jenkins pinch hit singled scored Kerstin Roth and Asimakopoulos to make it 6-5.
  • The Maroons had chance to tie the game but Tara Heatwole got Becca Hicks to fly out and seal the win for CNU.
