Roanoke Softball Sweeps Averett to Open 2017 Season

Game 1

Records: Roanoke 1-0, Averett 3-4

The Lead: Roanoke topped Averett 4-3 in the season opener for the Maroons on Sunday in Danville, Va.

How it Happened

  • After Averett scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, RC answered right back in the visitor half of the second inning. Becca Wenger walked with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Taylor Sutherland walked then Rachel Guilliams tripled to plate both runners and tie the game at 2-2.
  • In the Averett third inning, Kaitlyn Aherron tripled to open up the inning and came home to score two batters later when Andrea Grant delivered a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-2 game.
  • In the decisive sixth inning, Wenger singled to left with one out then was lifted for pinch runner Scarlett Sission. A single by Sutherland put runners on first and third. Guilliams then followed with a fielder's choice where Sission was able to score and tie the game at 3-3.
  • Two batters later, Briana Nardone reached on an error which allowed Sutherland to score what proved to be the game-winning run.
  • In its final at bat, Averett's Samantha Fox singled with two outs and stole second but Emily Salsberry struck out Aherron to end the game for the Maroons.
  • Salsberry picked up the win after going four innings of relief and allowing just two hits.

Game 2

Score: Roanoke 9, Averett 1
Records: Roanoke 2-0, Averett 3-5
Location: Danville, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke scored eight runs in the final two innings to blow open a tie game and top AU 9-1 to complete the sweep.

How it Happened

  • Sutherland was 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the win for RC, while Guilliams picked up a pair of hits for the Maroons as well. Katie Smith drove in three runs in game two for Roanoke.
  • Teresa Wagner went the distance in circle for RC, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out four.
  • With the score tied 1-1 in the sixth inning, Sutherland singled to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A Nardone infield single put runners on first and third.
  • Sutherland scored what would prove to be the winning run on a wild pitch. RC then loaded the bases with two outs and Smith tripled to centerfield scoring all three runs and making it 5-1.
  • In the Roanoke seventh, RC had runners on second on third when Guilliams singled to plate both runners and make it a 7-1 game before Taylor Slate singled home Guilliams to make it 8-1.

Up Next: Roanoke will be off until March 1 when it travels to Southern Virginia for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader.
